A Lobster Tale: Invalid Foreign Laws Lead to Years in U.S. Prison

The Supreme Court is currently considering whether to take the case of four businesspeople sent to prison for importing lobster tails from Honduras. Their convictions are predicated on supposed violations of the Lacey Act, which makes it a crime to import “fish or wildlife taken … in violation of any foreign law.” Here, the foreign laws are Honduran fishing regulations that have been declared null and void in Honduras, but are somehow still being enforced by American federal courts.

It is sad that our law makers are so bent on enforcing laws that are outdated. How the heck were they elected in the first place? You have girls as young as twelve being bought and sold for prostitution right here in the U.S. and nobody says a word.

It speaks clearly where are priorities are. Save the fishermen and screw the children. Where did we go wrong?

I don't understand why when judges are willing to make law from the bench they aren't willing to renounce unjust or ones that no longer exist? Were the businessmen crooks in other ways and they are using this to get to them for lack of ability in other areas or something? It sounds to me like one of those laws that sit there not enforced unless someone gets a wild hair or something.
