Jon Voight on Barak Obama
We, as parents, are well aware of the importance of our teachers who teach and program our children. We also know how important it is for our children to play with good-thinking children growing up.
Sen. Barack Obama has grown up with the teaching of very angry, militant white and black people: the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Louis Farrakhan, William Ayers and Rev. Michael Pfleger. We cannot say we are not affected by teachers who are militant and angry. We know too well that we become like them, and Mr. Obama will run this country in their mindset.

Surely we add to the mix something of ourselves, our experience, our judgment, our own thoughts. Our minds become more than the constituent parts of our 'programming', else would we not still be cave men at heart and in mind.

Well said here and I think that we need to wait and see what happen - he is not president yet

You say that like we're all individuals or something.
Perhaps that view isn't shared by Conservatives.

Conservatives tend to be far less collectivist than liberals.

Yet, here we have a conservative who thinks humans are nothing more than mindless automotons, incapable of reaching outside their "programming".
Not exactly touting his faith in individuality, is he?

He isn't entirely wrong. There is a serious lack of educated individuals in this country, and many of the uneducated appear to have congregated in Hollywood. Look how easily the average American voter is influenced/swayed by the media.
How could he not lose a bit of faith in individuality?

Fair enough. Maybe he's been in Hollywood too long and has forgotten and/or let his ideology slide a little bit because of it.
Still... Even George Michael knows you gotta have faith.
To be honest, I'm not entirely convinced the American voting population are the sheeple they are made out to be. Admittedly, I don't live in the US, so I don't have daily access to Americans in face to face conversation. And I can definitely see, via American TV networks, where many would be under the impression that the media controls the minds of Americans. They certainly try hard enough and broadcast as if they did. But I hear from and read more written by Americans like yourself and South, who don't strike me as the zombie type than I see otherwise. Perhaps the sheeple just keep quiet and don't make their views known, but I'd like to believe that the situation is not as dire as it is made out to be.

The situation is far from dire. There is a significant percentage of the population that is willing to fight to restrict government capabilities. Their efforts are keeping the collectivist morons from fully endorsing a totalitarian agenda.
Life is still good in the US.

I was referring to both ends of the spectrum. Go too far in either direction and the moron factor increases.
There is no shortage of media outlets at both ends.
I don't believe any of them has the collective you wrapped around their finger.

If a person that was raised by a certain mindset started to grow away from his/her up bringing would they not begin to separate themselves from those that held that mind set? In other words, wouldn't Barack have started to distance himself from Rev. Wright, and the others if he didn't agree with their way of thinking rather than try to deny it or defend it?
I know what you are trying to say about individuality, I just don't think it applies here.

I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue! - Barry Goldwater

I'd hate to state the obvious, but "collective you" seems to contradict the whole idea behind individualism.
