Inside the cat and dog meat market in China

Quote:

Dogs bark and whine behind high chain-link fences, some of them gnawing the wire so hard they bleed at the mouths while cats packed into crowded cages cower in fear if anyone approaches.

This isn't a pet store -- it's a meat market in Guangzhou, a city in southern China where eating cats and dogs is common practice.

At the Han River Dog Meat Restaurant in central Guangzhou, diners can choose from a long list of menu items, including dog soup, dog steak, dog with tofu and more. In the kitchen, the chef chops up meat for dog hot pot, one of the more popular dishes. Most customers like it spicy.

"Dog meat is good for your health and metabolism," explains Li, the hostess who declined to give her first name. "In the summer it helps you sweat."

But these local restaurants may have to find a new specialty. The Chinese government is considering legislation that would make eating cats and dogs illegal.

Professor Chang Jiwen of the Chinese Academy of the Social Sciences is one of the law's top campaigners. "Cats and dogs are loyal friends to humans," he said. "A ban on eating them would show China has reached a new level of civilization."

Eating dog meat is a long-standing culinary tradition not just in China, but also Korea. Cat meat can be found on the menu in China, Vietnam and even parts of South America.

Pretty sad that some people arould the world are not civilized.

I really hope China comes up with this ban real soon. Poor animals are being skinned alive, I started to fear after watching it for sometime as what would happen next. Really feel bad for the helpless animals.

While I'm certainly not in favor of dining on Fido, I do have to wonder how most Americans would react to the idea of devout Hindus demanding that we outlaw the eating of cows.

That said, I also wonder what is the purpose of skinning the animals alive? A humane slaughter is one thing but intentional torture is quite another.

G10 03-01-2013 08:24 PM

Totally agree with Bob here.

I love Mr. Joshua (my cat) and would never personally eat dogs or cats but what right do we have going into other peoples countries and telling them what they can and can't eat?

If they tried to do that to us, we'd probably tell them where to stick their ideas so why is it right for us to tell them?

Just curious.

tortured death is a different matter. We should tell them this is wrong.

ScriptMan 03-01-2013 08:31 PM

I must confess that I did not watch it all. Are they harvesting meat or fur?

At any rate I firmly believe in a kill before harvesting meat to eat.

I agree with G10 that their choice of meat is their choice.

Even if these folks are just harvesting the fur, there's no reason that the animal shouldn't first be killed in a humane manner.

Fur.

Hi Scriptman. I am not aware about the "Controversial Social Issues" section. The next time I have things like this one, I'll be more careful.

But the video is freakin' alarming, isn't it? I hope an organisation in China will work on it. They should!

That's right. I will not put the embedded video because it is very disturbing, but here is the link to a video showing how they kill cows in Indonesia.

I've had enough of it, when I saw the first minute of the video I stop watching.
It's just I really can't take it, it's too cruel.. I have so many pets before "I love
them" so much love that I can't even hit them, but this people they kill those
animals as if they don't have a life and that they can't feel pain. :( my heart breaks..
Their country can do something about this right?

When I was undergrad, I showed a simmilar video to this one in one of the classes where I had to make a presentation. Shocking. Scary. Some guys left the room. Can't imagine what would have happened had they shown it on TV.

aira 03-23-2013 03:12 AM

I can't last for a minute to see the whole video. I can't stand how people can just do terrible things like that - and seems like they don't care at all. :( really heartbreaking
