Google Reduces Description Length in Desktop & Mobile Search Results

Did you redo your meta descriptions to the longer length? Well, apparently you are going to have to go back and change them back to shorter ones:
Quote:

Two years after Google initially increased the length of descriptions in the search results, and six months after increasing it for most results, Google is reverting back to the old shorter length. For some SEOs, this means a lot of work is required to change over description meta tags from the longer version to the shorter one. But for those that never changed when Google made the change two years ago, it won’t be as big of a deal...

I thought meta description and tags were redundant anyway?

If you did change, you should have put your most important tags at the beginnign of your description so that any shortening will leave them intact.

From Dr. Pete at Moz:
Quote:

...Back in December, Google made a significant shift in how they displayed search snippets, with our research showing many snippets over 300 characters. Over the weekend, they seem to have rolled back that change (Danny Sullivan partially confirmed this on Twitter on May 14). Besides the obvious question — What are the new limits? — it may leave you wondering how to cope when the rules keep changing. None of us have a crystal ball, but I'm going to attempt to answer both questions based on what we know today...

I just finished increasing the length of my meta descriptions yesterday.
It will take months to revert back

Yeah it was 320 before as far as I was aware, or is it reverting back to this?

In regards to the thread topic, as for me it will not be too much of an issue although some sites will need to be adjusted accordingly. Oh well...... I guess you could say that it would not be called Search Engine Optimization, if websites and their meta description length would never have a need to be "optimized" every now and then.
