Amazon to open brand registry next month in effort to fight counterfeit products
It's about time they do something... this is a start.

Amazon Vice President Peter Faricy says the e-commerce site will be launching a brand registry program next month to expand its efforts against counterfeit products.

The brand registry will allow a brand to register its logo and intellectual property with Amazon, making it possible for Amazon to remove any listings or seller accounts that are flagged as counterfeit. Both shoppers and brands — in addition to Amazon itself — can flag sellers they believe are guilty of selling counterfeit products.

In an interview with Reuters reporter Jeffrey Dastin at the Shoptalk e-commerce conference in Las Vegas this week, Faricy says the program has been in testing but will be “widely” available soon to Amazon sellers in North America, at no charge to them.

According to the Reuters report, Amazon’s brand registry was developed in 2016 as part of its efforts to fight counterfeit products on the site.

Wonder how many people will be out of a huge income now. Thoughts on this?

I would be interested to see how this works...its all talk now though by the looks of it as there is no date?

eBay's 'Vero' system is a waste of time, I get people copying my listings all the time and I don't even bother reporting them any more as nothing happens.

Fake products by fake sellers on Amazon are a bigger problem than fake news in my part of the world. People tend to look at just the price. If something's cheap then just buy it, who cares if it's genuine or not! That kind of attitude hurts people who want to buy the genuine stuff. I always buy products after reading reviews, no matter who's the seller. Hopefully amazon will bring this to India soon!

What escalates the problem on Amazon is that fake products can also be listed under the real brand's listing as "other sellers". This basically mean that all products listed under the listing is the same product, but we all know that that's not the case sometimes.

But on the surface, shoppers will never know whether it's fake or real, since it's under the brand's listing. It's hard to believe this can be all true, but this can happen at times.

I just hope that they have enough staff to be able to police this properly. I know that copyright claims are made by trolls all of the time.

This is a good step, though. Amazon has been making money off ripped-off goods for a long time. Wonder if there was a legal reason for doing this?
