All of that side, this post is not about Ad sense vs. affiliate marketing.but instead it is about one of the most asked question in my experience regarding adsence .Recently I was giving a workshop at a hosting summit. When I was new to AdSense, I had the same question. I had heard so many stories about people making $50/click or making thousands of dollars via AdSense every month.

I see some replies but no body really gave the perfect answer to the question asked by OP.

By just placing your ads on website will not help because you need visitors. If you have 100 visitors a day, you can expect all 100 to click on ads. The secret of AdSense earning lies in useful content. Remember "Content is King", no matter today or tomorrow but these days with just good content you need to do a lot in terms of SEO, marketing your site. All these will help you to reach your target audience. If you have a 'made for AdSense' site then you need to have thousands and thousands of visitors.

All the best for your future projects.

The more clicks you have on ads, the higher payout per 1 click will be. If you have few visitors and almost no clicks, then the payout is really small per view/click.

The goal should be driving as much traffic as possible as more unique visitors would see you ads. Also more likely someone will click on it. And eventually your payout per click/view will become higher.

How many visitors you get to your site daily?

For bloggers, Adsense is a primary source of earnings. But for newbie bloggers, it is quite hard to earn.
by the way, you might follow these tips
  1. use page level ads
  2. block the low-quality ad network
  3. if you are eligible, you could use matched content ad units
  4. put link ads into your post, they have high ctr than display ads
  5. Do A/B Test to analyse optimal position
  6. single niche blog earn more from AdSense than multi-niche blog

I hope it would help you...

The above answer tells you everything you need to know.

Forget about the need to make money. Make content. Make useful content about a subject that other people like reading about. Keep adding content.

Keep adding to your site for several years (by several I mean at least 5 years).

In 5 years time, provided you have added decent content, you will have natural links to your site from people who are interested in your subject, and you will have lots of visitors. That is the time to think about money, as a certain percentage of them will click on the ads.

So the most important thing is GOOD, and frequent, content.

The second most important thing is time. There are thousands, if not millions, of websites that were created five years ago with the aim of making money that are either no longer online, or which have had no new content for years. There will have been thousands of similar sites started in the past month that will not be around in a years time. Google is aware of this and doesn't place great weight on such sites. Their algorythm places greater weight both to the age of a site, and to the regularity of new content over the long term.

There are no short-cuts.
