How can I tell why google penalizes my site?
Back around 2012 or so, maybe 2011, 2013... somewhere in there my site took a serious ding from google. It was shortly after a google update that issued penalties to a lot of sites. My traffic dropped to maybe 1/3 of what it had been. The site never recovered from that google update.

My site covered topics such as hiking, camping, gardening, prepping / survival stuff, fishing, political opinion... just a wide range of topics. Articles are usually at least 500 words, have original pictures I took, and embedded youtube videos.

I have a couple of different sites,

One is a wordpress blog

The other is a Zenforo forum that deals with gardening.

I posted an article on the wordpress site, then copied and posted it in the forum. Then I did a google search for the article title. The xenforo forum was the first search result, the wordpress site was nowhere to be seen.

Sometimes google does not list my articles for several days.

The site has Yoast SEO installed, sitemap is submitted to google.

Sitemap URL is in robots.txt

Site does not have any spam, questionable or illegal content.

Site does not link to spam sites. A lot of the outbound links are nofollow.

Site links to related topic sites, government sites, wikipedia, or authority sites.

No popup ads.

No adult content.

No copyright infringement.

Site has over 1,400 articles.

A large number of the articles are interlinked.

Site will be 10 years old in July 2018

For the past 6 or 7 years I have been working on why google does not like the site, and can not figure it out.
