And your questions is so generic that it's unanswerable imho.

When buying a domain consider everything. Price, SEO, your usage, potential, serps, pagerank, layout, wordtracker, typeins, extension...

Really you have to find your own niche and comfort zone for buying domains. Everyone has different criteria and opinions on that.

Is it a new name or an used name? What market is it for?

memorability
keywords in name
traffic of keywords
what are your primary keywords and how does domain name fit with them.
similar names
extension
any trademarks with domain name

If used, add these
PR
backlinks
banned from search engines
age of domain name
reputation of domain name
price
traffic of the site / domain

Your domain name should be targeted to a specific audience,you might want try testing different domain names,a least five to see what results you are getting from marketing effort.I found that in search engine if your domain names that start with letters that commonly used such in the beginning the alphabetical order the search engine will rank your site higher,making easier to find your site.
