Setting up your own web hosting service?
Hello all,
I'm currently trying to setup a personal web hosting service for my friends where they get an area of web space, etc, for them to use. Basically, a free web hosting service, etc with PHP, and all possible.
Does anyone know how I could go about setting this service up? ( If I were to get a HostGator/webspace account, etc)
Thank in advance.

Are you looking to get a Shared hosting account or Reseller hosting account?
If you get a shared hosting account, you can add domains or create subdomains on your control panel and make their FTP account only to access their hosting dir. Although if they wanted to have a MySQL Database, then you would have to give them access to your main control panel.
If you get a Reseller account, you can give them separate hosting accounts where they have full control over everything on their account.
If you're going to do something like this, then get a Reseller account.

To my mind, you need to get reseller account with control panel with the help of which you will be able to control everything. But you know, it is not an easy thing to find reliable and stable company to deal with. I am sure that glowhost.com will suit you down to the ground.

komad, start with reseller account. You will need to take care about promotions and web site design. Rest will take web host.

If I were you, I would choose ayksolutions.com for reselling. This stable and decent company offers good reseller plans at competitive price. Also it has nice reputation, so you can rely on it.

I can recommend you exmasters.com for reselling. You can buy their Virtual or dedicated server hosting and in the signup form you have to mention that you want to have hosting account with special reseller control panel access. It seems to be suitable.

Indeed. These are the first steps for starting hosting service...
Only to add - I recommend you ahosting.biz for quality reselling - the trustworthy company with good price/quality ratio.

I think you should look at having a Reseller for your services.

Most places you will be violating the TOS if you allow your friends to host their sites in a regular shared hosting account. For this you need a reseller account.

You should first get the domain and set up the site with whatever template you are planning on using. While your getting the server (reseller or your own) work on the sites SEO (directory, social bookmarking, etc submissions) and then start whenever your ready by posting about your site on blogs and forums.

HostGator will ban you for giving out free hosting on shared plans. It is against their terms of service.

That's certainly not the case on my shared hosting account. I can set up as many addon domains as I'd like and have separate FTP access to them for people to do updates. While they don't have cPanel access, for most things, FTP access is quite sufficient.

That is different that reselling their hosting. You just have other people doing stuff on your account.
The 11th rules in their terms of services says: Shared accounts may not resell web hosting to other people, if you wish to resell hosting you must use a reseller account.

Bob, you may want to read the TOS where you host. Just because you can does not mean it is allowed.

This is not allowed on shared hosting, if hostgator finds you to breaking there tos, your site would be suspended or immediately terminated from there server. Addon domain is allowed only for you and not for reselling to someone else, i hope you have already checked there hosting tos.

For reseller hosting, you may use webhostingbuzz.com
If you want to have full management, you may choose VPS+control panel
ServerPoint should be good for you.

I don't know whose 11th rule that is but, since my hosting company doesn't offer reseller accounts, that one certainly can't apply to me.
In a sense, I suppose that what I'm doing could be considered 'reselling'. On the other hand, since I'm maintaining the sites myself, the client isn't directly using the hosting that I'm providing him.
Yes, Scriptman, I have read the TOS quite carefully and can't find any term of it that prevents me from hosting my clients' sites on my account there.
