basically, what a reseller means is that a host offers acounts to people with large amounts of bandwith and storage space. these people then turn around and give out pieces of it for a price. basically, the purpose of it is that you yourself don't have to own the servers

So really you become the webhost, and sell webhosting to people. But you buy the space and bandwidth from the real host, and re-sell it to people in small pieces for more money

Reselling in webhosting just means your given permission to sell the BW and space provided by your web hosting company. Doing this without a reseller account could result in termination or even legal problems (lawsuit). On the internet you can resell basicly anything. Dedicated servershosting, domain names, cars.... get the point?

Reseller hosting is when you buy lots of space and bandwidth along with domain names from a web host.
And then selling chunks of that stuff to other people while charging them more then the web host charged you, in order to recover what you spent on the web host and making a little profit for yourself
The good thing about reselling is that you don’t have too many headaches, the web host managers the servers etc. for you, now the bad thing about it is that the support takes a bit longer to be sorted out, as first you have to forward a customer query to the web host, then the web host resolves the problem and then the reseller gets back to the customer, so the whole process takes a bit of time.
A good web host with 24/7 is really necessary in these cases to speed up support.

depending on the host, reseller could be another word for 'masochist'. It's a decent way to make some money, but the downside is that you will take a verbal beating from irate clients when the server goes down and the worst part is that you have little control over any of that. All you can do is put in a help ticket or make a phone call.. you are as helpless as they are but you are the one who will face the customer's wrath.
The moral of the above story is ... if you resell, choose your provider wisely.

Reseller account is good for starting up a hosting business, you should opt for a reseller account if you don't know how to manage a dedicated server and you want a dedicated server at a fraction of a cost. You can upgrade to a dedicated server at anytime when your site gets more traffic and when you are capable of managing a dedicated server.

If you're talking about hosts then I'd say anything other than a guy selling space on his own server is a reseller.
I know of hosts with hundreds of servers hosted in Rackshack's EV1 data centre but i wouldn't call them even actual hosts, they are reselling managed servers managed by EV1. they just have a website or two with admin control panel locations saved to their desktop and often work from bedrooms :p. Anything below working with the hardware I'd class as a reseller.
IMO

A reseller is said in it's name.
A RE-Seller. Which you can kind of re sell it as web hosting. If your starting a webhost company you would purchase this!

I have a reseller account. I use it to host my own sites, when you have many sites it's cheaper and more handy to be able to manage them all, also for adding new ones.

I think half of the people using a reseller account don't resell hosting, at least not as a real business. They just have a ton of domain names and it's cheaper to put them all into one account.

yep I agree with you!
it is handy of you design of course and if you wanted to push a few 'slots' to others so that it makes your usage effectively free.

I am a web designer. I started out with a 6 gig reseller account a few years ago because I got tired of spending half my time on the phone with big ISP's trying to get permissions changed or find out paths to this n that, etc...for my web clients.
So being a reseller has uses other than just price. It gives a designer more control over his/her clients data which equels better service.
I finally moved on to my own servers and now i offer reseller accounts, but they have their place.
Just my 2 pennies worth.

A reseller is a company or individual that purchases goods or services with the intention of onselling them rather than consuming or using them. This is usually done for profit (but could be onsold at a loss). One example can be found in telecommunications, where companies buy excess amounts of transmission capacity or call time from other carriers and resell it to smaller carriers.

Reseller the term itself describes its meaning.
As The Person who buy from the Seller and then Resells is called a Reseller. They can be of any kind and can sell anything from food items to grocery to software to computers anything.
Hope it helps...

Reseller accounts are mostly used by people to host more than one site in one place and not have to pay on a site-by-site basis.
