I think people say that the support is bad because the live chat people always tell you to email but through the email you do get a fast response.
Also if you are singin up to them i have some voucher codes that you mite like, i use to have a free month one but they took that offer off.
1.) Coupon Code - "iceishot" - $9.94 Off
2.) Coupon code "jury" - $9.94 Off
3.) Coupon code "hgc25" - $9.94 Off
4.) Coupon code "Hostcritique" - $9.94 Off

Hostgator is the worst hosting company we have ever dealt with in 10 years on the web
Here is my experience with Hostgator.
This company provided the worst service of any hosting company we have ever hosted with (and we have hosted with dozens about a ten-year period). Our server sent out listing confirmation emails and hostgator shut it down without any warning or attempt to contact us. This was a major site and caused extensive damage to our operations. They said we had exceeded there 200 emails an hour limit. This was not a continually ongoing process at that time and probably only exceeded their limit it by less than 100 emails within that one given hour. We then quickly made the decision to move our site to another host at that point, and after getting access again to our server, we moved our entire site to another host. Then we filed a cancellation form per their instructions back in January 2008, but they never cancelled our account (it's now May 200 . Then, we filed the form again several days ago when contacting them about the problem. They have consistently refused to close our account, causing us to waste an enormous amount of valuable time dealing with this issue. They finally sent us a notice it was closed, then two days later sent us another notice saying it wasn't. They have continued to utilize stalling and delay tactics to avoid giving any type of refund (their satisfaction guarantee is a farce) and keep the account open so they can charge our card again. All site owners are warned to never host with this company, not only do they have ridiculous limitations on almost everything hidden in their contract you agree to (when trying to act like they give you the best deal with unlimited everything), but wait until you try to cancel your account--a living nightmare. This has gotten so serious that we have filed complaints with the BBB, FBI, and FTC as it now stands. We highly recommend that you check their BBB complaints (there are a lot of them).

I use hostgator and my internet usage is spread thru the day and night and I have yet to see a downtime in my sites.
As others commented, their chat support is great, but if you have a more radical problem you need to use e-mail and the ticketing system.
Overall my experience with them has been great.

I have used HG for about a year now and they are an average web host.
Their online support is useless most of the time. I have questions a few times a week and almost every single time I log into live chat, they tell me to email them instead because they're clueless.
So I dislike their live chat, it doesn't help with most things.
They do install all Perl modules you ask them to, which is great. And they don't like PHP all that much, which I find very nice in a web host.
Pricing is a little on the expensive side but the servers they are on are pretty good.
I'd give them about a 8.5/10.

Don't worry DarrenC, I did drop them like a hot stone and went to hostgator
One thing about hostgator is that after they moved my site over, none of the cgi worked and I asked if they could quickly sort it as my site isn't funtioning properly and they said 'No, it's my problem' - Now thats what I call service with a smile

Yeah, alot of hosting companies are like that with regard to CGI.
I had loads of hassle with Webfusion, and I am still been billed for 2 accounts, that I've asked to be closed last year, and despite cancelling the direct debits they keep taking the money out of my account.

yeah webfusion are a bit pants, I have one shared hosting and one vps account with them, both of them are crud.
PHP scripts take an age to execute and support is non-existent. One of my sites was down for a week!

I have a couple of re-seller packages with hostgator and they've been great. An irritating problem recently is that I've been losing secure https: http://www.domain.com:2083 access to one of their servers. Hostgator re-boot then secure access returns only to come down again.

I have used hosgator for the past year and have been satisfied overall with their performance both in terms of customer service response and uptime.
Price wise I think they are pretty reasonable.

I dont find Hostgator prices very competitive, maybe its just me though being used to paying alot less for more space/bandwidth.

I've been with Hostgator for I guess over a year now and the uptime is really good. Downtime is seldom and is quickly resolved.
As for support, I've always been able to get immediate help both by phone and through live chat. Actually helpful help, not just a note reader. Every problem I've had has been resolved in under 5 minutes.
