i will seconc the comment about the live chat, it is generally useless (although if you get the person named NAT, he actually does answer some questions)

best to just email their support unless you have a simple question. They respond quite quickly.

Had a bit of downtime in the first 2 months (got my monthly fee refunded as per their SLA so they do honour that. Since then its been pretty smooth sailing

cheers

To follow up on what Charles said, their affiliate program is also one of the better ones out there.

Generally with me the only problems I've suffered is due to my own ineptness, so far they've been brill.

I have been with Hostgator for 18 months and I am very pleased with them. I moved from iPower, who were terrible. Hostgator live chat is not very knowledgeable but it is true that you can get an email response quite quickly. I subscribe to a couple of downtime alert and monitoring services and my sites always get a clean bill of health.

I've been using them about a year now and any problems I've ever had have been fixed fast and really well. The only thing I don't like about them is they don't allow overselling on Reseller accounts. Apart from that a perfect host!

Hostgator has got lots of positive feedbacks. I think they are good especially reseller packages. Dedicated hosting is so expensive.

Any host that has tons of users will have people on both sides of the fence.

I don't use Hostgator, but I do a lot of work for someone who is hosted with them. They haven't had too much in terms of downtime, but there have been a few occasions where their site has taken a very, very long time to load - probably because of problems with other sites on the shared hosting plan eating lots of resources.

Their support seems OK, but I've only needed to contact them a couple of times.

Exclamation Hostgator is the worst hosting company we have ever dealt with in 10 years on the web

Here is my experience with Hostgator.

This company provided the worst service of any hosting company we have ever hosted with (and we have hosted with dozens about a ten-year period). Our server sent out listing confirmation emails and hostgator shut it down without any warning or attempt to contact us. This was a major site and caused extensive damage to our operations. They said we had exceeded there 200 emails an hour limit. This was not a continually ongoing process at that time and probably only exceeded their limit it by less than 100 emails within that one given hour. We then quickly made the decision to move our site to another host at that point, and after getting access again to our server, we moved our entire site to another host. Then we filed a cancellation form per their instructions back in January 2008, but they never cancelled our account (it's now May 200. Then, we filed the form again several days ago when contacting them about the problem. They have consistently refused to close our account, causing us to waste an enormous amount of valuable time dealing with this issue. They finally sent us a notice it was closed, then two days later sent us another notice saying it wasn't. They have continued to utilize stalling and delay tactics to avoid giving any type of refund (their satisfaction guarantee is a farce) and keep the account open so they can charge our card again. All site owners are warned to never host with this company, not only do they have ridiculous limitations on almost everything hidden in their contract you agree to (when trying to act like they give you the best deal with unlimited everything), but wait until you try to cancel your account--a living nightmare. This has gotten so serious that we have filed complaints with the BBB, FBI, and FTC as it now stands. We highly recommend that you check their BBB complaints (there are a lot of them).

upperbid, the fact that you've used over 10 hosts in a 10 year period probably speaks to the demand your site requires and you probably need a dedicated server, not a shared overseller.

i've also noticed lately that the live chat support has actually improved. I have managed to get some actual answers and fixes from it lately (it still depends on who you get though some are still useless)!

Response

I've used over 10 hosts in 10 years because I build and manage multiple sites, not because I had to replace a host. Actually, the site in question was fairly new and most certainly at that time would not have required a dedicated server, and hostgator is the ONLY host I've ever had to replace. You think they're okay now, just wait if you ever try to cancel. Then let's see what you think. Hostgator is in my opinion nothing more than a resource for people with no action sites and that is who they cater too (they will restrict your account quick if you are using too much resources). Try reading through the contract you agreed to for all the numerous restrictions. Oh, and if you ever violate any of them, no matter how innocently, they'll shut your site down with no warning, and not even a notification to you. They are the worst host I have ever dealt with and absolutely no regard whatsoever for you or your site operations. I paid a year in advance, but if you are on month-to-month, they may give you a little better service since they have to keep you happy to keep the money coming in. Overall, I strongly advise anyone considering hosting companies to never make the mistake I made hosting with hostgator. If you have a little no-action site that will never amount to anything, then you'll probably be okay, but if you are a serious webmaster who is looking for a reliable host, then hostgator could end up being your worst nightmare.

my bad sorry. not everyone is going to have a positive experience at any host. As far as the big oversellers go, they are probably the ebst ones in terms of support and service. i use their resller account, have over 140 accounts some of them doing 15-20GB a month (an online shopping site) with no problems at all. That may not sound like a lot to some people but most sites really do not use that much bandwidth.

oh and if support or sales does not seem to rectify the situation, you can email the owner Brent, and he will take care of it for you. i did have one support issue that dragged on (partly my users fault) and finally got resolved and i emailed Brent for a free month credit for the trouble. Got it no problem.

we will all have good and bad stories about various hosts but you have to look at the overall, your budget and what you expect out of those hosts, if you expect to hive a busy site using lots of resources, then none of the oversellers will fit your needs.
