What do I need to setup my own web server?

I've 50+ websites, and I'm thinking about to host my site. What do I need & how much to setup my own web server?

Advice on servers that handle Multi-Media and heavy data base?

Hello;

How do I chose a server (s) that will handle a huge amount of multi-media (streaming video, photos etc)?

Actually, how does youtube handle all that media? That's huge!

Thanks in advance!

First you have to choose the hosting company where you're going to host you site, specify your needs and choose the suitable for you package plan.
I started like that when I had a project. Unfortunately I had to stop it because of private reasons but the service of the hosting company (ahosting.biz) was unmatched.

I've got accounts with 1&1, v7inc and webfusion, can't complain about any one of them.

I think you have to buy a dedi from a reputable company and it must not be cheap, otherwise you'll have many issues in future.

moving to dedicated if:
1. usage is too high.
2. visitor is growing
3. need other features that restricted by shared hosting, eg. email sending daily limit, etc

i using few hosting plan, and currently have 10+ sites, hosted at few seperate hosting site. guess some day i need to consider VPS or dedicated for cost reason as well

If you have no experience in running a web server, i suggest get a managed dedicated server. Let the technical part handle by the web host company while you concentrate on setting & running your site.

You might even consider starting with a large VPS and then upgrade to a dedicated server once you've become more familiar with server administration.

If you want to dive in feet first, get a reputable server management company to watch your servers or choose a host that offers fully managed dedicated servers.

Best of luck in your search!
