For what? And at what price point?

A quality reseller account may outperform a low end vps. It all depends on what you need and how you want to use it.

A VPS has a lot more benefits over a reseller.
1) Root Access
2) Dedicated Resources
3) Privacy & Isolation

A VPS would give you more reliability and room to expand.

James is right. A VPS will give you a lot more room to expand although having a reseller account gives you the benefit of not having to manage or worry about uptime on your VPS

Some places offer Managed VPS systems but nothing can replace the management put forth by companies monitoring the servers 24/7 with level 3 technicians.

You can go with VPS if
- you want to create reseller accounts
- need to run your own scripts

Otherwise, I would stick to reseller account. It's better in my opinion

Agreed. I wouldnt suggest a VPS unless you're more than familiar with Server Administration. Even if you purchase a fully managed VPS account, having to wait on someone to make changes that you could do yourself instantly in a control panel would really slow your business down.

Best of luck to you in your search.

Best Regards,
Darrell

VPS is for the most part a dedicated server. You are responsible for all the things on a VPS that would be on a dedicated server. As a reseller you would be a bit restricted in that respect as you would not even have shell access to the server.

Reseller plans are far easier if you are just starting off and not so familiar with ins and outs of linux.

Exactly my point. If you're looking to sell Reseller Hosting, other than a VPS and or a Dedicated Server, you might look for a host that offers WHMReseller (for true WHM Access). RVSkin also has a "sub-reseller" feature however it does not offer "true" whm access to your clients.

I think dedi is better and more reliable thing than VPS. More security I'd say.

I'm not sure what VPS you're used to, but the ones that people use tend to have control panel software installed just like that you'll find on any reseller plan - so using a VPS doesn't slow you down any more/less than a reseller plan... you have access to (at least) the same amount of stuff in terms of control etc.

I agree with this in terms of an unmanaged VPS - but for a managed VPS then I'd strongly recommend taking this over any reseller plan providing that the budget puts you in that price range.

A VPS is a much more scalable (and flexible) option than a reseller plan:
  • With most providers, you can upgrade seemlessly without any downtime/migrations which saves a lot of headaches!
  • You can decide what versions of PHP/MySQL you want to run, including if/when you want to upgrade them (and what modules/config you want too!)
  • You can have bespoke/"non-standard" software installed which often isn't a practical option for reseller hosting

Beyond that stuff, having better anonymity, guaranteed hardware resources, and the option of which control panel software you want to use/offer is a big advantage.

A managed VPS is a step towards a bigger VPS or dedicated server, and an unmanaged VPS is a step towards running your own bigger VPS or dedicated server.

A reseller plan is just another shared hosting plan - only you're trying to offer a service to your customers that you have absolutely no control over... worth avoiding (if you can)!

VPS would definitely give you more options but them again it means lot more responsibly than a reseller account. If you are just starting out go with a reseller account then make the upgrade once you are familiar with it.

Please outline the process to upgrade from one of your reseller accounts to a VPS...
