I'm not sure what VPS you're used to, but the ones that people use tend to have control panel software installed just like that you'll find on any reseller plan - so using a VPS doesn't slow you down any more/less than a reseller plan... you have access to (at least) the same amount of stuff in terms of control etc.

I agree with this in terms of an unmanaged VPS - but for a managed VPS then I'd strongly recommend taking this over any reseller plan providing that the budget puts you in that price range.
A VPS is a much more scalable (and flexible) option than a reseller plan:
- With most providers, you can upgrade seemlessly without any downtime/migrations which saves a lot of headaches!
- You can decide what versions of PHP/MySQL you want to run, including if/when you want to upgrade them (and what modules/config you want too!)
- You can have bespoke/"non-standard" software installed which often isn't a practical option for reseller hosting
Beyond that stuff, having better anonymity, guaranteed hardware resources, and the option of which control panel software you want to use/offer is a big advantage.
A managed VPS is a step towards a bigger VPS or dedicated server, and an unmanaged VPS is a step towards running your own bigger VPS or dedicated server.
A reseller plan is just another shared hosting plan - only you're trying to offer a service to your customers that you have absolutely no control over... worth avoiding (if you can)!
