Just A Thought....

I was thinking recently about aiming for the top spot on google for a really competitive keyword, then selling it to someone stupid enough to pay a whole heap of money for it.

but do you think this would work?

What keywords would you consider competitive enough for someone to pay for it?

Humor me on this one and give me your ideas - early stages of thinking.

Anyone think of any reason this wouldn't work?

It happens all the time. Someone builds a site, gets it ranked highly and sells it.

you might look around on ebay and see what things are going for.

there's no sort of guarantee that you'll get any amount though. and the really valuable rankings will cost you money to get (purchasing links, etc).

I did that with just contractors.com. Got it top ten on google for "contractors" and "contractor" and a couple hundred other search terms and sold it to an extremely rich dot com. (servicemagic)

Yeah, my first website I sold off about 3 years ago after getting into the top 5 for the industries top few keywords. Then sold if for a nice 5 digit profit. I'm thinking of selling my sunglasses site off as well.

Did the sites have much content, many pages, or did you just promote the hell out of them? Sounds like a lot of work, but could be worth it.

LOL why in the word would you sell a website that ranks well for highly competitive keyword???
If you have put all that work into it, you would be better of sticking with it for a while, and get even better money from all that traffic that you are getting!
Well, it also depends on how well traffic converts. But in most cases you would be better off not selling it.
