Anchor Text question?

I undersand the functionality of "Anchor Text" but my question is should your keywords be a short phrase or just they kewords you are targeting.

Example......
If I choose my keywords to be "cheap calling cards" and "cheap phones" so my anchor text would be "cheap calling cards and cheap phones"

Would I get the benfit of of search engine traffic from different combinations of "cheap calling cards and cheap phones" such as:
"cheap calling cards" and "cheap phones"?

I think you would think too many keywords in your anchor text of course would be a negative.

Just wanted to get everyone thoughts...

most people recommend sticking with a shorter anchor text. each word you add takes a bit away from the other words. it really depends on what you are trying to do though. i usually use shorter text though sometimes i will overlap a couple. i make sure i mix it up some though just not to look super duper automated.

Well I try to go with the pages target phrase and then change it around on other pages withinthe site:

if I go for the anchor text "dance Mixes" I would use Club mixes or House music mixes to mix it up a little.
I have done this for the term "dance mixes" and got in the top 5 in google for that phrase.

What I was looking at was the aspect of if you tied yourself down to such a limited "anchor text" you would be ranked good in that keyword search but not in others.

But like the idea of focusing on one set of keyword "anchor text" for a while then roating a week with one set then week with another set......

Thanks for all quick responses.

I actually agree with that theory. But kinda the method by which Arron said. For example I've marketed

California Models

But secondary keywords for me were California Male Models and California Female Models.

So in most of the anchor text I used 'California Male and Female Models'. Which helped me for all three of them. Kinda like never put your eggs in one basket, rather one keyword in this example
