link swapping services

Are link swapping services like linkmarket.com a good idea or bad idea?

I heard somewhere that Google dislikes these and I've seen my PR drop from 3 to 2 on my homepage recently.

you don't have an assurance that you will be getting the ones you like and of good quality...

If it is a link from high PR and related sites, then it is good! But as poksa said, there is no assurance for quality links. So, I suggest not to gamble the future of your site with these services.

What do you mean by quality links? Is that a link to a page with a good PR and a site with relevant content?

A link from a page with with good PR / site with relevant content, yes, that's the one.

Heres the thing then, I have been doing that and have about 100 quality links. Now I've noticed a competitor in the same line of work has about 1000 links on his site but 90% of them are irrelevant links to low quality sites. His PR is 3 and mine is 2.

Any thoughts there?

I'll PM someone the sites if they want.

I find it's best not to worry about the competition too much - make sure you are getting links in as you have been doing, but also make sure you only link out to 'quality' sites that will benefit your surfers and are in the same area of business as you are (and preferably aren't competitors). If your site is a good one, then people should start linking to you naturally.

Google clearly states that exchanging links for the purpose of influencing positions will get you in trouble.
