The site that I am optimizing does not appear to have a sitemap. Is there some way for me to check to be 100% positive?

What kind of sitemap are you talking about

html or xml like a Google sitemap

you should be able to see it in the source code

or if you have ftp access to the site you should also be able to see it as well

Yes, sitemap is very important for your site.
Sitemap for enduser will help them to navigate your site easily
Sitemap in XML will help google find your site in fastest way.

Sitemaps are definitely important, no doubt. Perhaps essential. That wasn't my question. I just wanted to know how to find mine if this site has one

unless you are using some pre packaged software, sitemaps never build themselves.

If you want google crawl your site quickly you'd better to make a sitemap.

Using sitemaps has many benefits, not only easier navigation and better visibility by search engines. Sitemaps offer the opportunity to inform search engines immediately about any changes on your site. Of course, you cannot expect that search engines will rush right away to index your changed pages but certainly the changes will be indexed faster, compared to when you don't have a sitemap.

Is it a CMS/forum website? Else as others said, you need to make it yourself or use a tool like A1 Sitemap Generator (or whatever sitemapper tool you like the best)

Both html and XML site map are important...html site map is imporant form user point of view while XML site map is useful from search engine point of view.. so create both..

Sitemaps will not push the rankings of the websites but they would definitely assist websites with more pages getting indexed faster, the XML version is great.
