Links within the site

When writing the links in the html i have always typed the full address http://www.thehumorpage.com/funny-pictures.html

but does it make any difference SEO wise if i type /funny-pictures.html

?

I don't think so, because search engine knows they are exactly the same page, but it's better to use relative path for maintaining.

relative paths make it easier to transfer your site to a different site, but they also make it easier for people to steal your website. it is a trade off.

search engines convert relative links to their full URL prior to assigning a document # and storing them in the search index.

Interesting point, I never thought of that, content stealing seems to be a severe problem nowadays.

there is software that searches for you automatically. you also can randomly search for long strings of text on your home page.

for example, the scumbags listed below my site on this search
http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...lking+Earth%22

likely stole their content from my site.

i have asked the site below mine to remove the content and they ignored me. i may ask their host to drop them and ask G & Y! to get them removed from the search indexes soon.

the third site is cloaking copies of my site.

the last one I am not really sure what they are doing.

heh, yeah content stealing is a bad thing when your running an informational site. and I'm not sure is google or yahoo will listen to you unless you can prove the content is originally yours.

I do not think that relative paths make a difference to how easy it is to for people to steal your website. As I am on a dialup connection I often download whole sites for personal referencing. (Yes the absolute whole site, but i do not put it back on the web).

There are free programs that will do this and the pathing makes no difference. if it is not relative the software makes it relative.

So personally I would keep pathing relative, but I always like the link to your home page (that is normally your logo) the full url.

So then when you link back to the homepage what do you put in the coding? <a href=""> Isn't good is it?

Should <a href="http://www.mysite.com"> be used?

Or <a href="/" be used?

Thanks.

no good programmer uses absolute url HOWEVER if you have a drop down menu the pages are only spidered if they do have absolute URL unless I am mistaken.
