Hmmmm... It might be a variation of what's called a 30 penalty. Check this out.
More probable is that you just lost all the benefit from the links that were pointed to your site when the GotLinks sites lost their ability to pass any PR.

I think its because I was using the GotLinks linking service, and linking to bad neighborhoods.

many sites like it penalized by making links from bad neighborhoods or some tools to build BL, some SEO service making bulk of BL in some small period.. Bettter always make manually ...or hire somebody to do it ....also keep updating content and give same preference for on page optimization too

Totally noob question I'm sure, but is a link farm and a link directory the same thing?
And if it is, then why would Google penalize for some directories, considering them farms, yet promote you for other directories (like Dmoz)?


I don't get it....is it cuz DMOZ was the first kid on the block?

And do the penalize you or just not count the links? I've read a lot of threads on this topic, and it seems like the juries out on that question.

You can file a re-inclusion request in google wemaster tools. If you really are penalized, then I think you will have to wait for few weeks before Google remove the penalty.

Well haven't been penalized for link directories yet!

Only thing I have been penalized for was when we reduced our PPC campaign. Evidently those ads count as links...or do you think it's the money?

That is way you should be careful in choosing your link partners, avoid linking to the sites which is considered as a bad neighborhood so that you won't get banned. Review link partners site first before linking to them.
