Ideal SEO Dir.
Ok SEO "experts" - heres a fun question:
What SEO work would you recommend on a directory if you were the SEO dude in charge of it.
For example: HTML extensions, e.t.c.

HTML files for pages, keywords URLs in the browser bar when surfing it, and spiderable links, for starters.

I would not put Google AdWords into a directory until I made it painstakenly obvious that I was concerned with quality or unless I was just making thousands of script driven pages that are only there to be selling adwords

Heres another killer question:
If you had a dir, what type would it be?
1) Free Dir
2) Recip Link Dir
3) Pay Dir

off the start I would be #1
and then I would probably transition to #3 with #1 as a slower option.

Yeah thats exactly what I thought, for paid dirs I dont think its is too good an idea. Sponsered listings - yes, but ads by google - not too sure.
It does ruin your professionalism, however some dirs do just fine - computer5.com - has adsense sweetly integrated

Don`t make it a free directory.. you will just invite all the spammers.. Any SEO can get atleast PR5or 6 within 2-3 months. So work on it.. and then cahrge a very low price, but not free in this spam dictated world.
Recip Link can be done, but proper editors should be in charge.
--- Just My opinion ---
But definatley I would like to know more about

wow directory cross references topic plus location & some local listed sites also list up in higher level regional categories.
this creates lots of various optimized word strings.
I think unless you are spending big bucks advertising your directory (like John is) you should make it free or have some cheap option until you start to get your directory filled up.

i would make it free to start with for sure...or else no one will want in. Or at least a good majority of people wont want in. also you can remove the spammers by doing human editing to start off with...then I would probably take payments later, depending on the success of the directory. and youve just got to make it truly relevant, honest and high quality to get the PR you need. Make it worth my link and i will link to you kind of philosophy. SEO has kind of shrouded out that basic reason of the internet and websites. make it releveant enough and people will link to you, so in your case make it a relevant, high quality and fair directory and you will do fine...and people will pay eventually IMO

I created a web directory application, it has the capability to run mulitple directories off a single installation. And its also skinnable.
Here is a sample: webhosting and the other is dotnet
I still have to do one very obvious feature, ADD URL!!
I'm also going to have Related Categories, Sponsored listings in there once I get done.
Other features which you can't see are hidden categories/listings for registered users. And each cat/listing can optionally be assigned to a Role, and a user has to be apart of that Role to view the cat/listing.
I also have to assign ownership to a category such that a user can be assigned to a category (at a specific level) and then be allowed to administor the category and listings.
What other features am I missing?

All that can be revealed for this directory so far is that it is, at the start, mainly marketted towards UK business. So we are thinking starting it off as a paid for entry directory, with some great marketting at the start.
I guy I know is making a directory called "North West Directory". It is targetted at businesses in the North West of Ireland. Not just websites, that's too limiting, it's address and phone numbers aswell. He charges £80 a submission (thats around $140), and has already got numerous submissions before the site has even opened, and has guaranteed them good placement in the directory. It's the marketting that matters when it comes to directories of this type. If this was a bog standard web directory for anyones website, I doubt he would have any submissions.
With the kind of marketing we have in mind, it will be easy to get the initial few listings to pay, and it gets easier as the directory grows. And as it is targetted to business at the start, they are evenmore willing to pay. More non business sites come later, when the site has built up and these people are willing to pay. But the marketting is the main thing, and we have lots of different techniques planned.

"Its about having high profit margins" - A great man once told me, and ironically the owner of many top sites online.

We cant reveal anything about our directory just yet as its top secret. Extensive marketting is needed - The best thing you must ask is what can my directory offer than no other can. Bluefind offers super high PR, traffic (and more), Dmoz links carries alot of weight, google probably helps with rankings etc
