Not exactly true. You will always rank for your domain name provided that your site has been indexed.

Both. It depends on the directory. General directories probably won't get much traffic, but if spidered might be good for a link. Directories like the Yahoo, Google and maybe even DMOZ directories do get traffic. It also depends on how well a directory is promoted.

Directories had its time, but when search engines came, they started to die. Although they could still help in links, I think there's very less traffic in that.

People don’t often visit directories except the popular ones such as Yellowpages, Superpages, Yahoo Local, DMOZ and other such popular directories to find what they need. I think search engines like Google & Yahoo are enough for such purpose. Most of the times directory listings are displayed within the Search engine’s results page. So honestly directory listings work indirectly but not directly.

Directories is for Backlinks but few directories have got nofollow tags isn't right?

Some are no-follow but all you have to do is check the source code, but even certain no-follow directories can bring good traffic. What I look for in a directory in addition to that is:

1. Is it well promoted. If so then it will be spidered often.

2. Are the links permanent. In most free directories the links are set to expire at some point.

3. Is the directory indexed in the major search engines. And on Google showing at least a white bar, not gray

4. How many clicks from the home page will my link be. If the page you're on is buried too deep you'll wait forever to get noticed. Being on page 47 inside your category is a waste. Free directories can get crowded.

5. How many links per page are there. I've seen directories with a hundred links per page.

6. Do the categories actually have the majority of links and text that are relevant to the category page. If so then the whole page will be relevant to your anchor text. Your link will be worth more.

7. How many characters am I allowed for a description. More is better because it will increase the relevance of the page to the category.

If all these points are covered then I will have a strong permanent link. If I have to pay $1 to $5 for it then it's still cheap. If they allow deep links then that's a plus also.

Web Directory means you can submit your sites in that with particular category wise they brings you link back to your sites (when your sites approved by directory owner or directory moderator.) some high quality directory are obviously Paid like V7N DIRECTORY, yahoo directory, Aviva directory, botw.org and some high quality directory FREE as well like Dmoz.org, seofriendlydirectory4u.com, canlinks.net, zoock.net, etup.org
