It's pretty new... Basically it helps search engines know if a page is a duplicate of another page and what the original page URL is so that they will not index your duplicates and instead index the original page.

Good effort. This will solve the problem somewhat for sure.

First time I've heard of this. I just got this question, what if the original page is a no index, no follow page?

Then that page will not show up in the SERPs and I'm guessing neither will the duplicate pages.

The canonical attribute helps sepcify which url you want Google to index. It kinda works as a redirect but only within the same domain.
For a redirect between different domain, a 301 is still the best choice.
here is more information about it:
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogsp...canonical.html
I think this article sums it up pretty well

301 redirect is the best method to preserve your current search engine rankings when redirecting web pages or a web site. The code "301" is interpreted as "moved permanently". After the code, the URL of the missing or renamed page is noted, followed by a space, then followed by the new location or file name. You implement the 301 redirect by creating a .htaccess file.

It's a new thing, supported by Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and probalby others.
The purpose of it is to be some sort of 301 redirect, but as a link within html, not actualy performing a redirect, but letting the crawlers, robots, indexers, know which page is which and from what category and help reduce "duplicate content".

As per your CMS system you need to apply an condition to apply that means you need to modify you header file of the CMS system. Which CMS you are using it?

I wonder if the Canonical element will help us resolve duplicate posts/links in a forum thread.
(Tee hee, just kidding. )
