SERP rankings are common problem is seo. There are times that your site is ranking well on search engines but tomorrow, your site has nowhere to be found! google is unpredictable.

there is not a manual to optimize a site , that's only my guess and your guess , help to reach that. and this is the problem.
for example for a file name someone recommend a_b.htm and another a-b.htm, why?

Decent Link Building...is easier said than done.. I get allot of crap email from webmasters that want Link Exchange, but they want to put my link on some poopy page.

Ranking consistently high in the SERPS for targeted keyword/keyword phrases. I have some decent articles that are original, informative and keyword rich (without spamming) that sometimes perform well and sometimes do not. I also have a few goofy articles that rank extremely high but offer little in the way of value other than a quick chuckle yet they are not targeted to perform well if you get my meaning.

I've been trying to develop my understanding of SEO for a few years now and what seems to hold true for me is the more I think I know the more I learn I don't know.

...but I keep trying and continually adjust important content until it hits top 50 in at least a few SE's.

There is no guaranteed way to be number 1 because your competition can be doing the same as you in optimising their site.

Rankings and Fluctuations are the most common ones. Also, duplicate content issues are rising more now than before.

Taking actions that you thought would help, that actually HURt your Ranking. Example:
Was on page 3 on Google for most popular keywords in my industry. I was greedy, I wanted page 1. So I added more content to the home page. A LOT more. Google rewarded me by bumping me to page 7. Took me 6 months to creep up to page 5.

(now I'm on page 11, but that's a whole nother story)

Keeping a site on the top 20 for a particular keyword that have a lot of competition.

hahaha.. sooo true!
worst than that is, optimizing thousands of sites then the client expects some results within three months (after the Google update). It's crazy!
