After help from awall19 (my bro) with submitting my site to a bunch of directories, How long will it be before i see my websites page ranking go up? A rough estimate would be cool

Depends on how many links you got, but sometimes you may see ranking changes within a week.

Well whats the difference between page ranking and search engine ranking?

I think you mean PageRank vs SearchEngineRanking

PageRank is just a measure of link popularity. if you get one really powerful link then it can give you a really high PageRank.

to rank well you usually want to have a few powerful links and also many links from many locations.

pagerank is just one of many factors in the google relevancy algorithm.

It is a realy good question though. After all a PR never got me a customer but a high SERP does. You see lots of low PR sites with good SERPs and lots of high PR sites with realy poor SERPs. Perhaps the PR thing was just a placebo of sorts to occupy all of us competition junkies while the SE's rank sites without having to battle our manipulative deviant tactics. :wink:

But PR is one of the many factors, which help you in achieving high rankings, along with good anchor texts from different C Class IPs.
Its also one of the factors (mostly for webmasters) to show trust in your site, and become your customers.

Here's an example to give more fact to my early statement on PR is a placebo: Search phrase: website analysis
Results:
First position = PR 10
Second = PR 0
Third = PR 8
Fourth = PR 0
Fifth = PR 7
Page rank has little enfluence on SERP.

I think the only time PR plays a big part in SERP is when you can't write the page for search engines but have a lot of anchors helping you gain recognition for the word. Write the page correctly and a PR0 can out do sites carrying even the higher end of the PRscale.

I am adamant on power of IBLs, and IBL from a high PR page will benefit really more. But if you have a PR of 9,10.. you will find it really easy to target your kywds. frankly speaking don`t have much experinece on PR9 or PR10, never got a chance to work on so high PR sites.. :wink: (Also Please note wired.com showing PR0, has a base site PR9, similar is case with Amazon)

But for a comepetive keyword like "website analysis" a high PR is a must, because these web site analysis sites always have an advantage of huge IBLs from sites which uses their remote tracking services. (embedded in javascript code). Shrewd guys...

You cannot figure out an exact formula, but still try to get links from high PR and theme sites. Getting links from high PR site will increase your PR automatically.

So getting high PR for your site is just a bonus...

And high PR will have other advantages too, like rankings in SERPs will go up if your kywds are present in your internal link texts, Title, etc.
