Search engine rankings - you type in something on the search bar, and the place where your site is - is basically your ranking

Search Engine Results Page (SERP)
The page that displays in a search engine when a specific phrase is searched for.
Page Rank
Devised by Google, it measures not only how many links point to a website, but the "quality" of the sites providing the links.

page rank is how google rank a certain page while SERP rankings apply your ranking in a search engine result page in some term but not all the higher the page rank the higher your keywords rank in google SERP. So you dont target higher Page rank but target to get higher SERP ramk and Page rank will follow to increase that i am sure of it.

it has a big difference... page rank was made by google. as far as i know, page rank is used to know how old the site is, how popular it is, how good are its backlinks. But this doesn't mean that if you have a high PR you'll get a higher position is search engine ranking. Because Search Engine Rankings are the results given by the search engines after a query was entered. They rank by crawling (SE's software used to scan the websites.-) the websites on how it follows the algorithm of the certain search engine.

Page Rank gives only Google.
The heart of the Google search engine is PageRank, a system for ranking web pages developed by our founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Stanford University.
Search Engine Ranking is nothing but our website displays in search results home page it's called as SERP

PageRank - is a family of algorithms for assigning numerical weightings to hyperlinked documents (or web pages) indexed by a search engine. Its properties are much discussed by search engine optimization (SEO) experts. The popular search engine Google to help determine a page relevance or importance uses the PageRank system.
SERP - short for "Search Engine Results Page", is the listing of results on search engines in relation to a query using one or more keywords that a user has entered. The pages of results that you will see are the SERPs.

PR is just one of over 100 factors that google takes into account when determining where your web page will rank in the serps. If you've got 2 pages where all other seo factors are the same, the page with the highest PR will outrank the other.

Page Ranking - is an algorithm used by google to weigh the quality of a webpage (homepage, subpage, etc.)
Search Engine Ranking - is the ranking you get on SERP. The search result page usually displays 10 website links, the uppermost position the higher the ranking on that certain SE)

The thing which is important to note that PR is fixed per url per search engine while SE ranking depends on keyword. Your site could be #1 for a one keyword or phrase or absent for many other keywords. The important metrics to watch is the position per keywords which are related to your site/content. E.g. if your site is a home for a hotel in San Francisco, important to know what is your site position per "hotel San Francisco", "reservation San Francisco" searches etc. The higher your position per more abstract keyword the better (e.g. "hotel"), because your will get more traffic from search engines.
