Home Pages backlinks effects on subpage?
How much effect do a lot of home page backlinks have on other pages.
Exp: I'm going to try and rank for a specific keyword and one of the sites in the top ten is http://www.al.com/alabamafootball/
That page has 400 something backlinks but
http://www.al.com has a ton of backlinks.
I think I can rank against the sub page, but does the homepage help that page in ranking?

Internal pages can help, but, ideally, it's links into the page directly that I would favour to give the most impact to the SERPs.

if it is easier or makes more sense to get links into the inner page then get the links pointing to it.
every bit helps and if links occur naturally there should usually be some into the inner pages of your site too.

Internal links have been quite effective for me for less competitive keyterms, but not for competitive ones.

Hmmmm Let me try this again.
I have a site that has an internal page about oranges. I have 200 external links coming to that page. I have 100 backlinks to my homepage.
My competitor has an internal page about oranges with 500 external links coming to that page. Competitor has 8000 backlinks to his homepage.
Am I trying to match or beat his 500 links to the oranges page or do I need to do better due to his high homepage backlinks.
I know I've simplified this without talking about specific keyword text links, and relavant content, and related sites, just assume some random equivalent mix for purposes of thsi exercise.

He may have many links that are not showing also.
Anchor text is also important.

It's the anchor text that'll really make the show - but not all links are the sme. If all 500 of the external IBL's are from a single domain, then that should be easier to beat than 500 IBL's from 500 different domains across 500 IP blocks.

you need to look at both fronts.
any site that had an inner page with hundreds of external (from a different domain) backlinks pointing at it is probably something I would approach with a keyword rich domain name and its own site. i would not usually approach that with an inner page from my site.
now if almost all the 500 backlinks are from his own site than you can take him out easily.
you do need to weight both though. direct links and overall site power. direct links is usually a better indication but some sites are also extremely powerful.

Thanks. A combination of Brian and Aaron's comments is what I was thinking. Needed some expert advise to bolster my thinking process.

Is there a program out there that gives an automatic breakdown of internal versus external links?

I think this tool kinda does what you want
http://www.rustybrick.com/link_analysis.php
keep in mind Google's backlink check is a bit screwy now and the search databases only let you look at 1,000 links deep
