How to deal with another site stealing our articles?

We have been writing and submitting a lot of original articles for SEO. Recently we found there is another company in our niche that has been taking our articles and rewriting one or two sentences here and there and publishing on different article sites from where we submitted. Obviously we would like to stop this. Any suggestions on how to deal with these kind of things?

I believe there is no way we can trace all of those who try to copy our articles and re-write them. One way I know but I'm not sure if it would be an effective process is to buy copyscape rights for protection of your content and have this rights posted on your content. This can help wade off some but I cannot promise a 100 % assurance but this has been proven to effect on those who copy content.

The first thing I would do is contact them and ask them politely to stop. Let's face it, it probably won't stop them. If it doesn't and if you feel confident enough, try to scare them away.

there are a few things you can do:
- try to report them for copyright infringement. It doesn't always work but you can give it a try
- Submit rip-off report, scam reports
- Write blog posts with their name + explain what they are doing. Lots of people don't like scrappers so affecting their online reputation might make them stop.
- Simply ask them to provide a link back to you (alternative)
- Add a little piece of javascript to disable highlighting options so that they can't copyand paste the whole thing. It'll just make it a little harder for them. Don't forget to combine it with a "No right Click" snippet so that they can't copy the text from the source code.
I guess if you submit articles, this won't work because they can copy it from different websites.
I am sure there are more options.

I can do more research tomorrow. Time to go to bed for me

The best way to protect your copyrighted work is that you register your copies at: http://www.copyright.gov/forms/ then take an attorney specialized in copyright and trademark services in case you have to go to court.

In most cases, DMCA will be enough to remove the infrigment copyrighted work. The first thing to do is contacting the SE, the registrars and the hosting company.

Long time ago I tried to contact the directly the site owners, but it is a waste of time, depending of how many people are copying your articles.

The search engines should detect more accuratly the infrigments, so copies will never show up and rank at the first place. This will discourage a lot of people stealing your hard work.

I found that it's generally not worth my time. I would go after stolen content only if they are ranking higher or causing my pages to be marked as dupe.

I agree that Julien has given some real good ideas but in my opinion if your articles are being re-produced and re-written, such that they are no getting traced by even Copyscape, then you cannot do anything against them. But yes if your original articles are used and re-published without your consent, that is a matter that can betaken up to the Copyright authorities.

Most of the things people have posted will not cost you any money. (because your reporting it)
To have actions done against the offender will cost you money.

Remember, the internet is a company. It's not free. There is no government agency that will step in and protect you. This is why stealing content happens all the time. Because for you to take actions will cost you money.

The question that should be running through your head is: how much money am I willing to lose to have this stopped and is it worth it.
I said "lose" because your going to spend money to write a letter to stop their actions against you. by a lawyer!
Your going to pay money to find their (snail mail) mailing address. Don't forget to send it certified. That cost money too.

If you do these simple things, you will have lost money and you can't get that back.

I haven't even gone it to court cost (which you pay at first). What they're in another state? Oh now you have travailing fees. Oh no! They are in another country! Wow, hope there is a law you can use against them.

Now you know why people who have been running sites for a long time say . . .
"Just let it go, forget it's happening, it's not worht your time nor money"

^agree with Corneo...just let it be...
There's no really way to stop them and give them a lesson unless you are willing to waste your money and effort...

This was also happened to me before.. I wrote an original article but unfortunately it was republished in other blog without giving me some credits as the author or giving a backlink to my blog. At first, I left a comment on his post containing my article.. However, I did not get any response from him and he just deleted my comment.. Then I sent him an email about my concern but still he just ignored my emails.. From that time, I stopped and just let the bad karma be with him...

From what I understand if your article is indexed by google 1st then there's nothing to worry. Google might still index them but they will never be showed in serps.

Had still same problem. Still do. And initially I chased them down, contacted them through whois and some of the articles came down. But how many of these people can you honestly chase down. So I just spend my time generating better content, more visitors and more income

Time better spent

Agree with everyone so far - more often than not you can spend the time chasing up people writing another 2 or 3 articles, and getting more backlinks. I know it's very annoying, especially if they are ripping off every single article you're writing, but they'll get theirs.

I still have a load of 404 urls in googles webmaster tools from a couple of blogs/sites for some of my sites/clients who ripped off articles and then tried to re-direct the urls. I've asked for them to be excluded, at least so they don't show as errors every time I log in, and they're still there, so I just have to ignore them.

If it's literally the case that they're ripping off every single one, then I'd get on contact and try and sound official or at least forward them your report to google, etc. which might scare them off.

Good luck, let us know if you get anywhere.

The thing with article directories is that they are easily scraped using very simple scripts. This scraped content is then used by others to set up additional directories where they can sell links within the content.
I agree that it is a waste of time to chase this stuff down. The idea is to make sure google gives you credit for the content first so that it does not matter who steals it. There are a few things that you can do to prevent your content from being indexed on scraper sites:
1) Only submit to directories that use captcha's
2) Social bookmark your articles as soon as they are accepted by the directories
3) If someone else is using your article and it is getting indexed as theirs, send an email to them and copy their web sit host asking that they comply with the terms of the directory in which they copied the content. Usually this means they are required to link back to the source. This has been quite effective for me when it is a site hosted in the US. Most hosts do not want copywrite issues on their plate and most scrapers will remove the content to avoid further complications.

Hope that helps. Good luck with your article marketing efforts!
