How exactly does submitting to Directories increase my PR?

I am in the process of submitting my site to some directories and I was wondering what the effect of this was to my PR value. Does it actually give me a boost even thogh there are tons of pages on each site? Or does it simply expose my site to ppl using those directories? SHould I only submit to directories to pages with higher PR than my site?

PageRank has little to do with actual ranking.

submitting your site to a ton of directories may not give you a ton of pagerank but it will make your site look like a natural part of the web. if you do some other aggressive linking stuff you will be given more leeway because your overall link structure will look more natural.

also if you have a keyword rich domain name you can usually get a ton of keyword rich links for a low one time price.

google is more about links from unique domains than it is purely about pagerank now.

Good comment. Some directories also give you decent traffic especially for site that is just starting out. Some of my best traffic source (as far as directory goes) come from directory that has no PR and uses redirected link.

Any link to your site is a valuable link as long as the search engines see.

So go to Google for instance and type the url of the web address from "www.xyz.com format " and if it appears in the Google database it would be good to be listed as it would be a link counting to you in popularity.

Google does value some links more than others but as the other post stated it makes you a part of the web.

The way I see it, consider every time you add a link you open another door to allow someone to enter your store or site.
