Is SMM (social media marketing) better than SEO?
Hello
I am new here but I have some experience of both SEO and SMM, I am working as web mkt. executive with Wisitech. I have noticed that for short term visitors/leads oriented projects SMM seems to be better strategy than SEO. What’s your take on it.

Yeah. Through SEO you get visitors from Search engine
but through SMM you get your site indexed and free visitors

Social media marketing is used more for specifically gathering traffic. It wont give dramatic results in terms of SERP and PR boost effectiveness compared what it does to traffic. It's a great addition to any traditional SEO work that you do, but it’s not a substitute. On-page SEO is definitely not as sexy as social media marketing, but it is still the most important investment in your website that you can make.
here is an article relating to SMM and SEO.

SMM can be used to leverage a Marketing campaign if done right. If the purpose is to build links and attract visitors, it works great!

Thx all for getting involved.
@ jingwen
from my extensive experience of both SEO and SMM at Wisitech i can safely say that SMM results in great traffic and if one is careful in selecting the right platform the traffic will be relevant too. For example you follow the right people or take in the right followers at Twitter and tweet about just the right thing, you are bound to get relevant traffic.

i do agree with that. seo is the basic method in web marketing. it's better to be expert on here first before jumping up on a higher competition.

Through SEO you will get permanent traffic and SMM is temporary way of traffic.

What kind of social media were you planning on marketing?
Search engine optimization - making your site rank well in search engines.
Social Media - putting your site or services in front of a targeted audience. And without the need of a search engine.
The two of separate but equal. Social media will not help your sit get indexed faster, its not going to help you optimize your site, its media.
Overall, depending on what "type" of social media your planning to market, you could get some very targeted traffic.
Example from my site:
Google organic search traffic - about a 48% bounce rate.
Youtube traffic - about an 18% bounce rate.
I am getting about a 30% bounce rate difference between google and youtube traffic.
It all depends on how much effort you want to put into the project, what type of media you plan on marketing and lastly, "where" you plan on posting the material.

Definitely use the two together. I caution people from using "either/or" type of thinking - but rather use a broad spectrum of methods to get visitors to your site.
Engaging in social media can greatly benefit your SEO efforts and ultimately your rankings. When Social Media drives people to your site, those people may find your content beneficial and link to it form their sites.

Smm is nt a substitute for SEO..its a support system for seo..it should be used along with the traditional seo as it helps pages get indexed faster..

I thin it really depends on your site and needs. For example, if you have an e-commerce site or affiliate site, you'll probably find that traffic from SMM converts much lower compared to organic SEO traffic (at least in my experience).

I like the way how you said it, yes it can be a support system for SEO because doing SEO is having different methods and alternatives for getting lots of traffic and backlinks.

seo has proven to be a long term performing investment, but smm has brought some benefits its still too early to know how crowded and how the smm systems will develop.
