First things first

What are you trying to accomplish by convincing your friend about seo?

Many sites can rank and do well without SEO

Seems like everyone wants to jump on the band wagon on this SEO.

I look at it this way I work with clients who have sites that have extremely excellent visitor value and google prizes this high on the list of must haves

They receive lots of traffic and have plenty of natural links pointing to them (not one link asked for) as a result of the quality of content they provide to the visitor, in a lot of cases unless they really want to hire me for a particular reason I have to passed up on them because what they do naturally is working for them

I admit this is probably the exception.

So as I asked what are you trying to accomplish for your friend?

Is he not getting indexed, poor positioning in the Search Engines

Low quality content etc...

I would look at this first before trying any SEO on his site. You will have a much easier sell if he lacks the essentials but if he is doing fine why try to fix something that is working.
