Subdomains versus Directories

Hello everyone!

I'm not very good at SEO (but I'm learning - I actually don't understand most of it but I'm trying...my main problem is I read something, don't understand it, and can't apply it to the site) and I've run into another question I can't seem to find the answer to (I've done a search but can't find anything that specifically answers my question).

My website is an ALF website (yep, the furry alien) and my site doesn't show up very well (page 6 when "alf" is typed). I'm not complaining or anything - I know it's a slow process, I've come a long way in the past year or so, still learning though. I have several (about 5-6, can't remember) directories on my website for the various shows...my question is, would it be better to make these subdomains??? I read somewhere that search engines (Google is my main concern) see subdomains as different sites and will view your website as having better external linking (or something like that).

My URL is http://www.alftv.net (I know it's not perfect but bear with me lol) - just wondering what the rest of you think about using subdomains instead of directories? Could it have a positive impact in the search engine rankings? Most of the links, from other sites, that I have go directly to the homepage (may be part of my problem) but I'm working on getting links to specific pages on other sites too...building links for a site such as this is pretty difficult actually.

Thanks for any replies.

If you are asking which is better, www .yourWebsite.com/forum/ and forum.yourWebsite.com, then the answer is forum.yourWebsite.com in terms of SEO. I'm pretty sure that's the case.

When I typed alf into google - i expected see search results 1 - 10 of 123, 456, 7891023

supprisingly only 1,720,000 - heres me thinking it would return part terms like gandALF and thousands of other words.

Learn something new everyday.

Thanks, I think it would be best to move my forum there.

Another reason I was asking is because I plan to put together an episode guide for the TV show and I'd like to have a different page for each episode (I want it to be very detailed). So that'll be 102 pages - probably best to use a subdomain for that right?
