Personally, I don't think that on-page optimization adds value to your SEO efforts, at least not worth the time investment. I could be wrong though.

It does. Take this scenario, say you are promoting shed tools, you are going to want to put shed tools in your title rather than putting something random. Also the more keywords and content your page has, the more chances it will get noticed by search engines.
