1000's of links

How on earth are new sites supposed to get 1000's of links? If google frowns upon getting lots of links at once how are we supposed to get enough links to maintain our rank in the search engines?

I am new to link building and have already spent hours just getting a few links - might take me all year to get to a hundred! Am I missing something?

having an original and rich content is always good but you still have to consider making it for people rather than for SE's

Ideas for increasing links ...

#1 Create and actively maintain a blog of relevant topics. People find topics of interest and link to them. Your blog will of course provide a link back to your website, increasing traffic and links.

#2 Create a newsletter that provides quality information that your target audience would have interest in. Post past newsletters online, either on a blog or on a special place for your site. People find topics of interest and link to them. If it is a good newsletter they will point others to it.

#3 Write articles of special interest to your target audience for your website and your blog. People find topics of interest and link to them.

#4 Offer to write guest articles for other sites and blogs, with the agreement that you can add an author bio with links back to your website.

#5 Join online forums that cover topics that interests your target audience. Sincerely, and actively participate in the community. Add your link to your profile page and signature, checking their specific rules for how and when this is allowed.

#6 Actively comment and participate in popular blogs that your target audience may have interest in. Many forums allow your user name to be linked to your website.

#7 Provide a free service. If it is good, people will link to it.

#8 Ask people to link to you. At the bottom of your articles etc, add a note that if they think the article may be helpful to others, please consider linking to it. Make it easy! Tell them how!

darn - was hoping you'd say free directory submission was still ok

Like No 8 - thats a great and easy idea - been stung with some of the others - like writing articles but getting no links back and commenting on blogs to be later no followed - have a poker site - don't know how many people will naturally want to link to that.

Thanks for the help - guess I will just have to knuckle down

I believe that what you are missing is the problem. You are taking in the wrong way. Instead of trying to build link to your website, build your website to create link. Add funny stories, interesting videos, free tools, useful resources etc....

And Cricket's Ideas are all good ways to get links.

I agree with you. People will definitely link your site once they found out that your content is useful.

Social bookmarking, article directories, and press releases may be of use to your link building campaign especially if your new and are trying to make your presence known within a certain niche.

I wouldn't worry about getting too many links..it's not as easy as people make it sound

...you'll want to rip your eyes out after a couple hours of submitting to directories and articles but it will be worth it. Also the above steps numbered were solid to help a new site get started.

Link building is the most important and most difficult task in search engine optimization. Some time you will get bored of adding your link on other sites but don’t loose your patience.

Keep you work up and as said above in this discussion if you can make your website to create link this will be the best. All search engines likes natural back links.

I totally agree to "Cricket":

The easiest, free and legit way to get high quality and natural links is to write excellent, useful, information rich content and add it in your site.

People who will find your content useful, will link to your site for free. Thus you will get 1000's of backlinks just via writing good content.

Yeah, original rich content seems to be the key. I've seen my competitors really use that to their advantage and get links from Wiki, which I know are hard to get (although they might be nofollow links now, but it's an authoritative link).
