Compete vs Alexa

Which is more reliable for website ranking?

I've got a discrepancy in ranking between these two sites by 500,000. Is this normal?

I know what you mean. I've checked my site and it's totally inaccurate on both. Alexa seems to not be current at all. Compete does seem to be better but the data is definitely off. On compete it says most of my visitors are coming from keywords that are not the one that actually are sending the most traffic.

They are 2 different parties. Therefore show different types of stats collected from different sources.

Alexa only monitors web users that have downloaded and use their toolbar, I have not heard about the other one you mentioned I will check it out.

Alexa is easy to cheat by installing their toolbar and browsing your site; Compete is easy to cheat by installing their JavaScript and browsing your site.

Google Trends for Websites is another useful tool somewhat with somewhat vaguely similar functionality.

Sorry Spencer but that is not valuable help or useful tips to give out.

Alexa and Compete are basically a waist. If you want to measure up, just gain quality back links for great site owners who have high quality back links as well. When you want to drive traffic, don't look into Alexa or Compete to use, try Google Analytics or other free services to find target traffic, then aim for the niche of your own to drive more traffic.

What is a niche? It's a topic of interest that you have that is related to other web site owners in which will return the favor of "Traffic Love" to your site and carry on this easy task of unique, new and returning visitors to your site.

Avoid Alexa, it's just a toolbar use of people viewing your site and should not be taken seriously, nor Compete.

One correction, when I said "Compete" I was thinking of QuantCast.

So many corporations offering similar (but not identical) services!

Compete sucks for average websites, where alexa is more acurate. In the end they are both relative.

Both are reliable..just its dimension are different..

I don't trust either one of them to be honest because I don't see either one being any more than vaguely accurate. I do believe both give you an indication of how your site is performing but if your looking for actual, real time stats then I don't think you can count on either.

I rely on a combination of stats pooled from WHM/cPanel, Analytics, Adsense, as well as individual stat software within my CMS'.

Oh well, I don't think Will is referring to cheat your own websites. And I don't think that his tips are not that valuable at all. I guess he is just stating that these tools can easily be manipulated and therefore is not very reliable at all to use..

I myself don't really give a darn thing about these tools.
