Hello,
Now, you ask is directory submission effective, this is reall a broad question and the answer could be yes and theanswer could be no depend on what you really are asking.
Now, are directories effective for delivering traffic to your site? The answe is no, to be honest not many people go to directories to find a site.
Now if you are asking if they are effective in SEO and are effective in building backlinks and increasing ranking then the answer is . Yes. Directories are great source of backlinks and you can gain many links and help increase google ranking.

They will help with backlinks, but should only be a small part of your marketing campaign. I think article submission, social bookmarking, and guest posting are more important, but submitting to a few directories won't hurt. The only directory I would pay for is yahoo, other than that if it is not free more than likely it is not worth your time. Just my thoughts on directories though. One more thing if the directory is in your niche then it is a good thing to submit your site and perhaps pay if the PR is high enough.

I can see some of top ranked sites listed in directories. I somehow feel that it still help on ranking, as long as it's a dofollow directory.

If you submit your site to the right category of the directory with the right details of your site (using right keywords in the title of your submission) and the web directory is quality (it only approves sites that are relevant to the category), then I still believe this link building method is effective. Though the benefits it brings to the site are not much high compared to as before...

well said in the second paragraph. i agree. it's effective and i know from the work i've done manually over the last 6 months, page rank increased and higher in the serps - almost all do to lots of work on submitting to directories and getting backlinks, using a variety of different kind of directories. best of course to go for the quality ones that have been around for a while too...

Effect is small, but there is effect. Creating quality content in that amount of time would have been better.

For a free directory site. i think before you submit, review the site first. If the site can give ou one way link why not but do not waste time to a directory site that is no longer active.

True, a directory site that is not active often contains lots of spam and you don't wanna put your link there if you want quality links for your site.

I have recently been involved with a directory submission service and according to a few tests conducted, some of the directories carry a benefit. Most do not. If you hire a directory submission service, make sure that they have a trackrecord of satisfied clients. Otherwise do not waste your money.

Some times it takes months for you site to be added in any directory sites. Submitting to 10 directory sites is not enough, you have to submit at least 10-20 per day and do it everyday for a year. Then maybe some of it will be added.
