Scrolling Marquee Tag
Has anyone used a scrolling marquee tag on a website? Google seems to be picking the text up on one I have seen.

I have used one on one particular site just to be obnoxious. generally I think they are a bad call though.

A bad call? can you explain why? personally I think it really has no influence at all on how Google ranks your site when there is some scrolling text on it.

Not a bad call from Googles perspective but a bad call from a site design perspective. Marquee tag makes your site look like it was built for geocities in 1998. It's a rather unprofessional tag and just screams 'newbie'.

I find them so annoying... I would highly recommend against them... I agree with Rivux about the 1998 Geocities look... hehe.

Ist rule of SEO [imho] is never say never.
With a bit of CSS those marquee's can look very nice.
Try this cobbled together/copied thing.
<marquee id="adsense" direction=up width=75 height=125 style="background-color:white;border:1px solid black">Adsense food here...</marquee><br/>
<a href="javascript:adsense.start()">Start</a> | <a href="javascript:adsense.stop()">Stop</a>
<script>
if (document.all)
adsense.stop()
</script>

Thank you Mr Book :)
A combination of your posts and Mr Scott's...
"I don't do SEO for new clients and I don't even like doing it for my old clients."
...did it for me.
So, why do you hate the marquee?

I will "confess" to using the marquee tag on my Christmas Webcam - IE is actually smart enough to handle the "slide" behavior which only does it once and leaves the strong on the left hand side - Netscape/Firefox just keep looping it.

Hulkster, where did you get the scripts to get the information about a visitor? Like it a lot.
