do reciprical links from non-relavent sites hurt or help you?

if they have good PR and traffic.... isnt it worth having... does it affect your google search engine position having more links? even non-related ones?

if i sell an obsure product and have a shopping category for links... are they relevant because they are also an online retailer... even if they sell something totally unrelated to you?

and how does google determine if your links are relevant or not... ?

They help you. Relevancy is often in the eye of the beholder.

I would try and get your site listed in shopping directory websites.

true, but...

if you link to large quantities of irrelevant stuff then you are assuming a risk with Yahoo! hand editing results. also if you link to tons of exceptionally random stuff then it looks bad to your site visitors and knocks away at some of your credibility.

when in doubt with link partners its usually a bad idea to link into pharmacy gambling debt or adult sites as a starting thumb rule.

One concern is to whether you end up linking to penalised sites - if you're not going to be very discerning of who you are actually linking to, then you're playing a game of increased risk.

each additional link you put on your site is added risk. it does not hurt to link to good stuff, but if you are linking to lots of other sites that are doing massive link exchanges it can eventually come back to bite you
