http://www. or http://sitename

From what I've learned, there is a different PR for http://www.sitename and http://sitename

Is one better than the other, or should you just pick one and stick to it when making backlinks?

Pinyo is on the right pathPinyo is on the right pathPinyo is on the right path
stick with www.sitename.com and optimize for that. A lot of people are used to adding www. so if you optimize for the other version you will have mixed result (like I did). Also some how redirect non-www version to www version as my new host is doing now.

Play save and type in that 4 extra characters.

Dos, try to keep your listed URLs "consistent"; like Pinyo already mentionned, it isn't good to have mixed results from both indexed hosts, http://www.YourDomain.com and http://YourDomain.com !

Insert following file in your .htaccess and you will get rid of possible upcoming problems.

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.YourDomain\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.YourDomain.com$1 [R=301,L]
