I would never use "nofollow" on a good source

Linking to them means voting, a vote that proves that the site, or that certain page of a site, has quality content. How would search engines rank sites based on their popularity? Besides, if we all use PR sculpting then what's the use of link building? SEO will slowly die, well not the on-page optimization at least.

The nofollow attribute is just a mechanism that gives webmasters the ability to modify PageRank flow at link-level granularity. Plenty of other mechanisms would also work (e.g. a link through a page that is robot.txt'ed out), but nofollow on individual links is simpler for some folks to use. There's no stigma to using nofollow, even on your own internal links; for Google, nofollow'ed links are dropped out of our link graph; we don't even use such links for discovery. By the way, the nofollow meta tag does that same thing, but at a page level.

Sounds like a big waste of time to me - I've heard of people putting nofollow on all links to external websites out of the fear that their pagerank is somehow flowing away to these other sites. I seriously doubt this to be true - why would Google penalise you for linking to other websites? That's what their entire search technology is built upon - if everybody starts putting nofollow on all external links, Google's entire ranking system comes crashing down. That would seem to be counter-intuitive.

Sculpting will help, but not a lot and should be used to keep login and other pages you don't want indexed.

It's good to link to similar sites, and I'm not a fan of adding the nofollow tag to all external links.
With that being said, I don't like to have over 20 external links on my sites, I try to keep the content to link ratio up and it seems to of worked for me so far.
