I think search engine friendly urls help. And changeing all of your pages might cause your site to loose its ranking in the results pages, but it its been online for awhile, the site should recover quickly.

I also highly recommend that you submit a sitemap to your google webmaster tools, yahoo site explorer account and your bing account.

I am not sure but I think that URLs have very little importance in SEO. There are many other factors which have much more importance than URL structure.

You can simply have URLs that best describe the content of the site and that are easily remembered by the users.

From my experience if you make more outgoing links you will lose ranking.

without a doubt seo friendly urls work. I have recently worked on a product and did a lot of work to get good rankings, it took me a while to get a top 10 placement. I then worked on the same product for a sister company site using seo friendly urls. within a month the seo friendly site leap frogged the other with hardly any work to this product.

My experience is that all other things being equal SE friendly URLs will put you above the competition. It's just one more easy thing you can do to rank a bit higher in the top 10.

I use hyphenated keywords to name the pages, and it seems to be helpful with long tail ranking in the search engines.

Jennypretty, ~Kev~ gave you some great tips.

Friendly urls are part of serious SEO, it doesn't take a long time for Google to update your urls if you are switching from unfriendly urls to friendly urls.
http://www.google.com/support/webmas...n&answer=76329

Don't forget to redirect all old urls to the new ones, so you will not lose your ranking.
Here some good advises: http://www.webconfs.com/how-to-redirect-a-webpage.php

The thing is SE-friendly urls are also visitor-friendly - which IMO needs to be the primary focus.

Using keywords in URL helps to cover different variations of keywords. For example, you can use "designer clothing" in title, "designer clothes" in meta and "designer apparel" in URL ))))

Putting your keywords in your URL can help but not much. These were the words from Matt Cutt when he was asked about keywords in domain name.

well it is not that important for google now a days.

i have seen lot of websites without clean url and getting well index and getting traffic as well.

i think clean urls are more to do with user experience. when user sees his desired keyword in url (i'm talking about google search result page) he feels more comfortable to click on it

Try to put your keyword on your URL too. That will help you to get more traffic. but it is little difficult, having keyword on URL. If it is possible do it.
