Does "Brands" affect SERPs placement

Hey guys I was just going over some videos on youtube and this questions has really been in my mind since I have been fighting for ranking with such sites as about.com and Forbes. Anyway it appears that Brands do not have the "edge" within the SERPs, but rather the trust of a site and expertise of the webmaster tend to be more important. Anyways this is just kinda a paraphrase from the video~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMfWPWUh5uU

This may disappoint those that think the only reason they are below certain sites is the websites have a "brand name".

"Brand name" sites huh? perhaps it's because they get more traffic and backlinks despite of their not-so-good content.

If Google is putting more weight on brand names, then it wouldn't be fair.
I typed "camera" in Google and the top position is a shopping site of almost all known brands, followed by a definition from wikipedia, then camera.org and finally kodak.com.

Google are putting more rank into "brand" sites. They confirmed this a while back. People have challenged what a "brand" is but not with much reply.

They probably human manipulate the rankings of high profile sites. They did this to try and get rid of more spam sites. You know the story, you do a search for a well known company and are confronted with 50 affiliate sites instead.

ami1 is on the right pathami1 is on the right path
This is pretty basc guys. Establushed brands have a lot of reputation and generate a lot of backlinks.
Doesn't mean branding per se has SEO advantage. Just reflects thesuccess of the brand

TrafficBlogger is liked by many
Big brands just have a lot of sites that links to them. I don't think there is a column in google's database specifically to determine if the site is a brand or not. All websites are brands. Bring brands just have more money to run advertising campaigns and more people that know about them, so naturally they will get more links.
