Directories - how good are they?

How helpful is it to have a listing in a directory for $50 , when the pr for the directory webpage your link sits on has a PR 0….

The home page has might be pr6, 7, or 8 , but the link page I would be on is only pr 0… so isnt it just the same as any old reciprical link with another website at pr0?

A better question is how much traffic will that $50 link bring you? If it is indexed, it will help link popularity. You might want to see how well the page is indexed by other SE's. Also is the link pointed to you a direct link or a redirected link. For $50, I would want a direct link.

Why can't it be about both? Good directories will provide you at last one PR4+ link, and at least a small to modest amount of traffic depending on the popularity of the directory...

While the purpose of any good directory should be to drive traffic, I think the most significant results of most good directory listings will be seen in the SERPS rather than in direct trafic.

To myself, a directory listing has good SEO value primarily for the fact that in number it provides a good spread of natural linkage, from on-topic pages, and can help get keyword anchors. PR should ideally be a bonus, because PR itself can change whereas the other factors are more steady.

I wouldn't pay for a PR0 page unless actual PR is high and invisible or it would bring traffic. I would create my own sites instead.
