Subdomain is usually better. Search engines consider sub-directories less important - more directories mean less and less important.

If you have multiple verticals of your business competing for search engine ranking, you can build a sub domain/content strategy to help you gain traction for multiple sets of competitive keywords.

However, if you don't have loads of quality content you're better served by incorporating a subdirectory strategy.

My suggestion is avoid subdomains because they are treated as entirely new sites by google. Better use folder.

Subdomain mainly treated by SEs as a different site. If that 'help' page has something to do with your website, why would you want to put it on a subdomain?

if the primary domain is well ranked and good in SERP then better go for the second.. . in SEO sub domain will treat as individual.. but the second will be another category of main domain

I saw Matt Cutts saying in a video that Google no longer like to see subdomains. Google now prefer to have subdirectories. Matt said that people have used subdomains to spam SERPs, so that is why Google now prefer to have subdirectories instead of subdomains.

It depends on what you put on the sub domain. I only put content that is genuinely different. Different theme/script, different stuff totally.

In essence, subdirectories will always be superior because they receive the SEO benefit that you have put into the homepage URL. Sub domains don't receive that benefit no matter what people say.
