Do you read threads before you post in them? Can you please explain why and how search engine submission does anything for a site, let alone help the keyword ranking?

well, i think search engine submission is definitely to be done.
although the search engines do take some time to pick up your site but it's much better rather than waiting for SE spiders to visit your site.

You do not need to submit your site to search engines just make sure to have links to your web site, the best way to get included in a search engine is through natural linking.

Having an historic profile on the internet helps, as well as updating textual content on a regular basis. If you have an xml site map then Google will know when you have made changes to your pages. As well it may increase spider frequency to your site.

you don't even need to submit your site to Google. Google is a fully automated search engine that uses software known as "spiders" to crawl the web on a regular basis and find sites to add to our index. In fact, the vast majority of sites listed in our results aren't manually submitted for inclusion, but found and added automatically when our spiders crawl the web.
However, if your site offers specialized products, content, or services (for example, video content, local business info, or product listings), you can reach out to the world by distributing it on Google Web Search.

why? whats the point?
I am happy if my competitors do it - they can waste their time doing that while I do something that actaully helps.

One point to continue, you could submit your site to some verticle search engines of your industry. Quality is always more important than quantity.
