Penalized sites

I have recently noticed that www.homegain.com has a PR 0 now, and used to have PR6. They still show up in cache. How can you tell if a site is penalized if it is still in the google index, but now is now longer showing up in with a good search engine position, and has PR 0?

If your not sure you are being penalized, how would you know for sure?

When you say penalized do you mean completly droped or just taking a hit on pr.

I don't know on the pr side but if you search for homegain.com on the google search fi the company comes up it's still in the index. Which it is, so it has not been droped.

if you are still cached and showing thousands of backlinks you are probably fine

He still shows over 1500 backlinks.
Why would his PR drop to zero though?

Some of the inner pages still have PR. What has changed on the site? The reason for asking is that if you change your home page file name or extension is probably the most common way to lose your PR.

Example:
If you were to cahnge domain.com/default.asp (PR

to domain.com/index.html the PR would drop to 0 until the next update.

If you have been penalized by Google how do you know why and can you get it removed?

the site in question did not appear penalized.

some penalties are for the lifetime of the site and some may expire within 60 days. usually most sites that are penalized have good reason to be penalized and it is rare that a site gets penalized.

from what I know most penalties usually are associated with linking schemes with shady sites.
