When links go bad

I would like to share one scenario and request you all to share your thoughts and inputs here.

Yesterday, a client came to us for his link building requirement. He was bit upset with his previous link building vendor. Reason was he thought that his website ranking suddenly dropped due to the link they delivered. Client also shared his link details for our perusal and instructed us not to deliver links of that quality.

We checked all links and we got that link sources are thematically relevant and having PR 1-2. So, the question is “how could it be the reason for SERP downfall” as we are not convinced with client’s argument.

Sometimes, if there is "unnatural link building" or a sudden "big time increase of inbound links" , it may fall. But I think it will climb up again in few weeks time.

Links can't hurt you or only will cause a minor penalty if that. If you could be hurt then all you have to do is get "bad links" for all your competitors sites and you'd be on top.

if links were relevant and on quality websites there is no way it could explain the serp fall

If the domain age it is new, then it is common to let Google think that. Your choices are either to continue the linking process and the SERP downtime will probably be gone in a month or so, or let it die down and wait a while as the domain is just new.

Also, it can be because a certain change within the website in terms of on-page optimization. It can be your client side as well. Ask them if they changed any of the coding or title tags of their website and etc.

I personally think that backlinks cannot hurt any site as site owners cannot control who link to them.

If backlinks can hurt, then people will start to build links from spam pages for their competitors.

The worst that can happen is when SE ignore links: reason can be different like too many backlinks in quick time, bad links etc

This is a common thing, sometimes when you build links to your blog/ site. It result to a sudden drop, but after some days it boost up on SER. All you have to do is to focus on links to related sites. High PR is an advantage

back link with relevant site does never hurt. may be site is penalized for doing too much linking in short span of time linking should be natural.
