U said well.. better start with Google webmaster guide and then go for any third party... the reference for v7n is good and informative.. me can say...Forum like v7n is the best guide.. learn new technics by talking...

Actually there are a lots of sites that you can go to, to learn the basics of SEO..for me I prefer to go to seo forums threads..just read all the thread there and I'm sure you'll learn a lot about SEO...
