Importance of reciprocal linking
Now a days question raises about the importance of reciprocal link. I think it has some importance if,
* The Number Of Sites Linking To You
* The Words That Are Used To Describe Your Site In The Links To You
* The Relevance Of Those Sites As They Relate To Your Subject Matter
* The Link Popularity Of The Sites That Link To You
* The Search Engine Rankings Of The Sites That Link To You

Guys and gals, excessive reciprocal linking has a good chance of getting your site a penalty.
Here it is, straight from google webmaster help
http://www.google.com/support/webmas...n&answer=66356
Quote:
However, some webmasters engage in link exchange schemes and build partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites. This is in violation of Google's webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact your site's ranking in search results. Examples of link schemes can include:
* Links intended to manipulate PageRank
* Links to web spammers or bad neighborhoods on the web
* Excessive reciprocal links or excessive link exchanging ("Link to me and I'll link to you.")
* Buying or selling links that pass PageRank
|
Personally, I try to avoid reciprocal links. Mainly because the people at google have not defined what "excessive" is. Is it one link, 100, 1,000,,, links? Nobody really knows.

I will not say that reciprocal linking don't have any importance in terms of getting high PR, but the one way linking looks more natural and helps to gain search engines trust.

This is what Google's Matt Cutts has to say http://www.webmasterworld.com/link_d...nt/3530468.htm
Quote:

MATT: Use your gut. Trading links is natural and it's natural to have reciprocal links. At some level, natural reciprocal links happen, but if you do it way too often, it looks artificial. My advice is to go with your gut and if you're worried, you can use nofollow.

I think reciprocal linking should only be used in moderation, as google guidelines forbid "excessive" reciprocal links

Reciprocal links are not important as they used to be few years ago. Try to avoid giving too much links out of your web site. It`s important to keep your link juice. Do not let it to leak.

But make sure to get reciprocal links back from the home page... some people are trying to give from resources, links pages which in return not useful...

Yes, nacworld, you're right...a link coming from a "Links" page is not that valuable as a link coming from a home page. But of course, it is way harder to get one

It`s not smart idea to place bunch of links in footer of your home page. This is good way to be penalized by google for link sale. So, if you want to ask someone for link on home page this link must be blended in some text or something like this. The best way to avoid to be penalized by Google is to use banners instead of links.

Link pages are not good idea too. If you are looking to exchange links with someone, its better to exchange articles with links.

Recoprocal links are not giving link juice same as One way link. And also most important is the ranking and relevancy... always try to exchange links from same category and also high / equal PR sites

We should keep in mind that having a lot of reciprocal link can sometimes harm your site. Choose a site who is not considered and belongs to bad neighborhood and have a good PR so that you can take advance of the shared link juices.

Sometimes exchanging links with high quality websites, which are closely relevant to yours in terms of theme and subject could prove to be useful.

Reciprocal links are good at some extent. But you should go for social bookmarking & forum posting, blog writing etc. These are much more advantageous.

Reciprocal Link Exchange if done naturally as Matt Cutts says is acceptable. Naturally means both webmasters linked to one another without any agreement whatsoever but did so because they believe the importance of the website they linked to.
Matt made an example like Yahoo directory listing Google and at the same time Google directory (DMOZ) listing yahoo directory. In this example we see a reciprocal link being made. This is assumed that they did not exchange link of course.
According to Google Policy, Google strictly prohibits "excessive" link exchange to manipulate page rank. Although it is not really defined what is excessive, bottom line is, reciprocal links are not bad. Although, it is quite true, one way backilinks are much better.
